Empiras Global Academy kicked off the AfriHack Connect weekend with Corporate Day. This gathering brought together tech-savvy youth and seasoned industry professionals, facilitating rich discussions and networking opportunities that highlighted the intersection of technology and business.

The day began with the first panel discussion, which focused on "AI and Automation and Its Impact on Business." Moderated by the knowledgeable Chesarae Pillay, the panel featured insights from industry leaders Nyiko Mgiba, Will Green, and Razeen Benjamin. They explored how advancements in artificial intelligence and automation are reshaping business practices, driving efficiency, and creating new opportunities, while also addressing the potential challenges these technologies present in the workforce.

Next came the second panel, which delved into "Tech Startups Impact in South Africa." Under the guidance of moderator Dan Mabbyalas, panelists Phumi Korber and Chuka Ezenwalie discussed the vibrant startup ecosystem in South Africa. They highlighted the innovative solutions startups are bringing to various sectors, the unique challenges they face in a competitive landscape, and the essential support services that foster entrepreneurial growth.

The third panel, moderated by the insightful Latha Kalpee, tackled the crucial theme of "Higher Education and AI." Panellists Gabi Immelman, Patrick Whang, and Dr. HJC van der Westhuizen engaged in a thought-provoking discussion about the implications of AI on higher education. They examined how educational institutions are adapting their curriculums to better prepare students for a technology-driven future and the role of AI in enhancing educational methodologies.

A compelling fireside chat followed, featuring the dynamic Busie Sekgonetso, who brought attention to the current climate surrounding the hiring of tech graduates in the business sector. She shared valuable insights into the skills and attributes companies are seeking in potential employees, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in a rapidly changing tech landscape.

To cap off the intellectually stimulating day, participants engaged in a light-hearted icebreaker called "Fantasy Boardroom." Students were randomly placed into teams and each assigned a popular cartoon character, tasked with pitching arguments for why their character would make the best candidate for Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Telkom. Characters included the likes of Spongebob Squarepants, Iron Man, and Shrek. The creativity and passion displayed by the teams culminated in an exciting competition, with Team Batman emerging as the final winner for their compelling pitch.

The hustle and excitement didn’t stop there, as the hackathon continued the next day, providing participants with further opportunities to innovate and collaborate on tech solutions.
